Cloud rarely disappoints on its own. When a migration goes wrong, the cause is almost always a rushed, unplanned move — not the technology. A calm, staged approach removes most of the risk.
Start with the outcome, not the tool
Before choosing a platform, be clear on what you’re trying to achieve: lower maintenance, remote access, better security, room to grow. The right destination depends on the goal, and naming it first keeps the project honest.
Assess before you move
Map what you actually run — applications, data, dependencies, and how people use them day to day. This is where hidden surprises live, and finding them now is far cheaper than discovering them mid-cutover.
Migrate in low-risk stages
Move in waves rather than all at once. Start with something self-contained, learn from it, and keep each step reversible.
- Pilot — a small, low-stakes workload to validate the approach.
- Core services — email and collaboration, usually the quickest win.
- Business applications — migrated with a tested rollback at each step.
Plan for after go-live
Migration is the start, not the finish. Ongoing monitoring, patching, backup and cost review keep the cloud secure, fast and predictable — otherwise the savings quietly leak away.
